Cheerio readers!
This time my adventure brought me close to the land of waterfalls and unlimited stars.
It all happened very spontaneusly that my mate Ziyed came up with the idea to do a short trip to the south island of New Zealand. Two weeks later we boarded the plane to Christchurch and already started our sidequest to eat at as many subways (and use their wifi) as we can.
We arrived on a dark and rainy day. After exploring New Brighton and buying a rainjacket for Ziyed (who is only used to australian summer) we made our way up to the north as the weather forecast for the Queen Charlotte Sound looked very promising.
We crossed Nelson, where I had the best coffee in the southern hemisphere. Went over to the Abel Tasman National Park after it to do a nice trek along some beautiful beaches - few only accessible via water - just to meet some folks who went there without any swimsuit.. definitely something you should not pack when you visit dream beaches like it.
Other stops have been Westport, the Pancake Rocks, Te Anau with the famous glowworm caves (an insane out of this world experience) and Milford Sound.
The great part about New Zealand is that you can just go anywhere - almost every road is kind of a scenic drive. Weather doesn't matter - I enjoyed the moody and rainy days as much as the sunny ones. Climate is a bit cooler in comparison to Australia but so enjoyable.
We met so many fellow travellers. Kiwi Island is indeed crowded with tourists but the fact that no one is making any profit close to the sights with any trash souveniers makes the visit so much better.
Especially the mountains are really unreal - like from a fairytaile. Sometimes bushy and soft looking - sometimes just incredibly steep ones sticking out of the water. My wish is to return in the winter when all the mountains are covered in snow.
We have been sneaking into hostels or campgrounds for showers, went to the Franz Josef Glacier at midnight, woke up at 5 a.m. to shoot sunrises, debated about the lyrics of Big Shaq's hit Man's not hot and if subs are better with or without beetroot.
It was an amazing experience to just be in this beautiful country. Especially noticeable after coming back to Melbourne is the difference in travallers attitudes. The country is much more for explorers, hikers and nature lovers which is definitely my alley.
